I start by listening
I’m Hissan Gul. For more than fifteen years I’ve worked where communication, data, and human behaviour meet — in newsrooms, in the development sector, in e-commerce, and in strategic digital communication. One thread runs through all of it: I find out what’s actually true — about an audience, a market, or a situation — before anyone spends money or effort trying to act on it.
That’s the whole discipline, and everything else is a tool inside it.
The method, not the label
Most communication starts with a message and goes hunting for an audience. I work in the opposite order. I begin with evidence — what people ask in public, the language they use, the patterns hidden in the data — and let that evidence shape the strategy. Less guesswork, less wasted budget, and messages that land because they were built from what people already believe.
Four capabilities feed that method, and they overlap far more than they divide:
Audience analysis — reading who an audience really is, what they believe, and where their attention actually sits, in the languages they actually use.
Data analysis — finding the signal in the numbers, whether that’s audience behaviour, campaign performance, or an operational dataset that no one has thought to interrogate.
Ethical OSINT and verification — gathering what’s already public, and checking it holds, using open sources only and methodology that survives scrutiny.
Digital and communication strategy — turning all of the above into content and campaigns that work, and into paid media that respects the budget instead of leaning on it.
Over the years I’ve turned this way of working into named systems I teach and use with every client — including the Signal-to-Strategy Pipeline, the Smart Spend Model, and the 5S audience framework.
Where I’ve done it
I came up through Pakistani media — producing prime-time current affairs and building newsroom and digital operations across several outlets, including setting up a citizen-journalism programme and overseeing hundreds of published stories.
As Head of Digital at Independent Urdu, I directed digital strategy and video operations for an international network of more than 80 journalists and contributors across over 10 countries, and built the production systems and audience-analysis routines that held it together.
In the development sector, I led a digital fundraising programme that raised PKR 25 million, and built Pakistan’s first indigenous Zakat Calculator alongside other decision-support tools.
Across a decade of consulting, I’ve architected more than $200,000 in ad spend reaching over 400 million people — for clients spanning government, international NGOs, healthcare, real estate, e-commerce, and media.
And throughout, I’ve trained: universities, public institutions, newsrooms, and private teams — in audience analysis, ethical OSINT, data-driven content, AI in journalism, and mobile journalism.
Training and background
My foundation is in media studies and international relations (Bahria University), built on with fellowships and certifications including the ICFJ Misinformation Fellowship, an Inclusive Reporting Fellowship with the British Council and MMfD, and digital and data journalism training through Reuters Academy and others. I work across English, Urdu, Punjabi, Saraiki, Pahari, Arabic, Persian, and Hindko.
Today I work as a Strategic Digital Communication Coordinator at a diplomatic mission in Islamabad. I write and consult here strictly as an independent professional, and nothing on this site reflects or represents my employer.
Who I work best with
Mission-driven organisations — the kind that can’t afford to waste a rupee or a dollar of budget, and can’t afford to get the message wrong. If that sounds like you, I’d like to hear what you’re working on.
