The systems behind the work
Good communications shouldn’t be improvised from scratch every time. Over fifteen years of campaigns, newsroom work, and audience research, I’ve turned what reliably works into named methods — ones I teach, defend, and use with every client. Here are the five that carry the most weight, each defined so you can see exactly how it works.
What is the Signal-to-Strategy Pipeline (5S)?
The Signal-to-Strategy Pipeline, or 5S, is my master framework — a five-stage sequence that turns public audience evidence into a tested campaign, in order: Signal, Sentiment, Story, Spend, Scale.
- Signal — Listen to what your audience is already saying across open, public channels. Begin with evidence, not assumptions.
- Sentiment — Map how people actually feel, and why. Not how we’d like them to feel; how they do.
- Story — Frame the message around what’s already there, in the language your audience recognises.
- Spend — Put budget behind a message that’s been tested against reality, so every rupee or dollar travels further.
- Scale — Turn what works into a repeatable system instead of a one-off campaign.
Most campaigns run this in reverse — story first, audience last. Putting it back in the right order is the difference between spending and connecting.
What is the Smart Spend Model?
The Smart Spend Model is a way of building communication architecture that reduces paid dependency over time. Most organisations treat ad budget as the engine; I treat it as the accelerator. The model concentrates spend on the messages and audiences that have already shown they’ll respond — so paid reach amplifies something real, instead of propping up something weak. Done well, the share of results you have to buy goes down over time, not up.
What is Listen-Before-You-Launch (LBYL)?
Listen-Before-You-Launch, or LBYL, is my pre-campaign protocol. Before a single ad runs, LBYL uses ethical, open-source listening and sentiment mapping to answer one question: what does this audience already believe, and in what words? Done properly, it catches the misreads that quietly sink campaigns — while they still cost nothing to fix. LBYL is the discipline that feeds the first two stages of the 5S pipeline.
What is the Trust-Led Communications Framework?
The Trust-Led Communications Framework is the synthesis of the others — audience analysis, ethical open-source research, and digital strategy combined into systems that build trust, not just attention. Attention is cheap and short-lived; trust compounds. This framework treats every campaign as either a deposit into, or a withdrawal from, an audience’s trust, and plans accordingly. It’s the standard the other four methods are ultimately serving.
What is the 5S audience diagnostic?
The 5S diagnostic is the audience-analysis engine inside the pipeline — the structured way I read an audience before any strategy is set: who they are, where their attention sits, what language they use, what they already believe, and how they behave with your own channels. It’s how raw listening becomes a decision about channel, message, and budget. (In practice, 5S names both the five-stage pipeline and the diagnostic that powers its first stages — the listening discipline and the sequence share the same five-S logic.)

These methods sit behind every engagement. If you’d like them applied to your work, let’s talk. If you’d like to see how they play out, read my writing.
What is the Signal-to-Strategy Pipeline?
The Signal-to-Strategy Pipeline (5S) is Hissan Gul’s master communications framework: a five-stage sequence — Signal, Sentiment, Story, Spend, Scale — that turns public audience evidence into a tested campaign, run in that order rather than the usual story-first approach.
What is the Smart Spend Model?
The Smart Spend Model is Hissan Gul’s approach to paid media that treats ad budget as an accelerator, not an engine. It concentrates spend on messages and audiences that have already shown they respond, reducing an organisation’s dependence on paid reach over time.
What is Listen-Before-You-Launch (LBYL)?
LBYL is a pre-campaign protocol that uses ethical, open-source listening and sentiment mapping to establish what an audience already believes — and in what words — before any budget is spent, catching costly misreads while they’re still free to fix.
What is the Trust-Led Communications Framework?
The Trust-Led Communications Framework combines audience analysis, ethical open-source research, and digital strategy into systems that build lasting trust rather than short-term attention, treating every campaign as a deposit into or withdrawal from an audience’s trust.
